Sea of Light 2023 Highlights

November 27th, 2023

Sea of Light impressed audiences across the country this year as over 16,000 children drew, explored, and delighted in the experience. More than 5,500 of these children saw Sea of Light in regional areas, from Ulverstone in Northern Tasmania, to Cairns in Far North Queensland.

When the installation was presented at at SALT Festival in Cummins on the Southern Eyre Peninsula, visitor numbers were more than four times the town's population of 500 people!

Sea of Light at Ten Days on the Island (Tasmania) marked the Australian premiere of a new addition to the installation – artworks by Contemporary Aboriginal Visual Artist Elizabeth Yanyi Close became part of the installation as they are painted in light across the sea floor. Elizabeth's work was enjoyed by audiences at festivals across the country who were invited to interact with the drawings on the glow floor.

"My paintings speak to the connection between land and sea, the earth and waterways and are informed by the diversity of the Australian landscape. They also reflect the deep relationship that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia have with Country.” – Elizabeth Close

In July we had a special showing of Sea of Light at Hawthorndene Primary School as part of their NAIDOC week event where Elizabeth played some tunes.

Sea of Light in the Starlight Room

Sea of Light brightened the Starlight Express Room at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in October, inviting young artists who are patients at the hospital to craft their artworks on an enchanting sea floor.

Artistic Director Geoff Cobham was thrilled to share the installation with patients and their families: "The Women's and Children's Hospital together with the Starlight Children’s Foundation do such incredible work; in particular the Starlight Express Room is all about making healthcare experiences better for children and young people by using play and creativity. My own family spent time there when my son Huey was young, so I know how important it is to create a space that feels like a world away from the reality of hospital.”
