Superluminal FAQs – Teachers

November 7th, 2023

Thinking about coming to Superluminal? We answer all of your sticky questions about our new interactive installation.

What is an interactive installation?

Interactive installations are participatory arts experiences for children and their families. Audiences move through the installation space (a series of interconnected rooms) engaging with hands-on experiences. Interactive installations are often presented outside of theatre spaces, at museums, galleries, and festivals.

Patch Theatre’s other interactive installations include Sea of Light and The Lighthouse – both of which received exceptional feedback from students and teachers. You can read more about the process of creating an interactive installation in this interview with Patch creators Geoff and Maddog.

What will we experience?

Superluminal is unlike a traditional seated theatre show. The sessions allow one class/group at a time to enter the installation, guided by a performer. As students move through the four rooms, we encourage exploration through play, movement, touch and vocal expression.

Where does Superluminal take place?

Superluminal takes place within the South Australia Museum. You will be directed by staff upon arrival at the main entrance.

How long does Superluminal go for?

40 minutes

What age is Superluminal suitable for?

Superluminal has been created for 4–8-year-olds (Preschool to year 3).

How many students can be booked into each session?

One class – approximately 26 students (plus five adults/teachers) can book into each session. Small classes/groups from the same school can be combined into one session. If you need assistance, please contact Patch us at patch@patchtheatre.org.au / 08 8470 0165.

The experience has been created for small groups to ensure each student can have a hands-on experience, using the objects and tools in the installation.

How do I book in more than one class/group?

You can book all sessions on the one booking form – please select one session time per class/group. Once a session has been booked, it will no longer appear as available on the booking form. If you have multiple bookings, they will be grouped on one invoice for ease of payment.

What happens if I book multiple sessions and arrive with several classes?

New sessions start every 20 minutes, so students won’t have to wait too long. While waiting students can explore the Museum (book here) or if you are looking for other activities in the city you could try the following:
Adelaide Botanic Gardens
State Library of South Australia
Art Gallery of South Australia - AGSA
Migration Museum

Do we need to book to explore the South Australian Museum?

The South Australian Museum recommends that school groups book their visit here.

I have students with access requirements – what accommodations will be made?

We welcome students with access needs. Please let us know what their access requirements are when making your booking so we can make accommodations accordingly. We recommend groups with many students with access requirements book in the final session of the day to allow extra time to experience the installation.

Can I change my student (or adult) numbers?

Absolutely! We understand class/group numbers change and that you may not have your final numbers available when booking. To make changes to your booking email patch@patchtheatre.org.au.

Can I change our session time?

You are welcome to change your session time. Please book your preferred session/s on our website and contact us to cancel your original sessions patch@patchtheatre.org.au. Please keep in mind that availability will become limited as the season books out.

Can I cancel our session?

We would be sad to have you cancel your booking but understand sometimes this is unavoidable. Please email patch@patchtheatre.org.au – note: cancellations must be made within 14 days of issue of invoice.

Will education resources be available?

Yes! As this is a new experience our education resources are still in development. The Superluminal education resource will be available in term 2, 2024 In the meantime, you can use our online activities.

Can you book transport for my group?

If you are travelling on Adelaide Metro free travel is available with an approved group booking for primary school students with up to four adults on Monday–Friday between 9.30am and 3.00pm – find out more.
